About Cancer:

According to the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Facts & Figures 2005:

Cancer has eclipsed heart disease as the leading cause of death in the United States in individuals younger than 80 years of age. It is expected that 1,372,910 new cancers will be diagnosed in 2005.  Men have slightly less than a 1 in 2 risk of developing cancer in their lifetime; for women, the risk is more than 1 in 3.

Louisiana in particular suffers from one of the highest cancer mortality rates in the nation.

Cancers of the lung, breast, colon and prostate will be the most commonly diagnosed cancers in Louisiana this year.

Breast cancer continues to be the most common cancer in women other than skin cancer with approximately 3,870 new cases expected in Louisiana this year. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer for men, excluding skin cancer, and an estimated 3,400 Louisiana men will be diagnosed with the disease in 2005.

Overall, the American Cancer Society reports that an estimated 23,280 new cancer cases and 9,670 cancer deaths will occur in Louisiana this year.

Many of these cancers are potentially curable. Surgical intervention is an important part of achieving a cure from cancer and over one half of cancer cures are achieved through surgery.
